Navigating the treacherous waters of Windrose requires more than just ambition – it demands a vessel capable of withstanding the elements and enemy fire.
For any aspiring buccaneer, the ship is the centerpiece of existence, serving as the primary mode of global transport and a vital tool for engaging in lucrative naval warfare. Early in the game, however, players find themselves in the unenviable position of a captain without a command, forced to navigate the world on foot for an initial period.
While the overarching narrative is designed to lead you toward your first deck, the process is manual and requires specific milestones to be met by the player. Understanding the transition from a castaway to a fully – fledged naval commander is essential for anyone looking to dominate the high seas in this pirate adventure.
Securing Your First Authentic Pirate Vessel
The journey toward ship ownership begins shortly after the tutorial when you reunite with Dr. Galen at your home base. Galen, who survived the loss of your previous ship, is eager to assemble a new crew and pursue the pirates responsible for your initial defeat.

The doctor provides a basic craft to facilitate your early maritime exploration, though its utility is strictly functional rather than impressive. This initial boat is essentially a primitive raft that struggles to reach speeds of 10 knots and offers no combat or defensive advantages to the player.
Despite these limitations, this raft is the mandatory tool needed to reach various story – driven locations and trigger the essential missions required for a real upgrade. You must successfully initiate and progress through two major objectives: the “I Need a Bigger Boat” quest and the “Crew Rescue” operation.
The “I Need a Bigger Boat” quest eventually leads you to a larger, more traditional seafaring vessel, though it is discovered in a state of severe neglect. To make the ship seaworthy again, players must gather a specific set of raw materials and interact with the hull to begin repairs:
- 100 units of wood
- 20 nails
- 20 pieces of coarse fiber
- 10 lengths of rope
Restoring the physical structure is only one part of the equation, as a large ship cannot function without a dedicated team at the stations. This is where the “Crew Rescue” mission becomes critical, requiring players to infiltrate five distinct pirate encampments to liberate seven crew members from their cells.

Once all seven sailors have been rescued and the materials have been applied to the hull, the crew will tow the vessel into open water. At this point, the ship officially becomes yours, allowing you to step behind the helm and chart a course for any destination on the map.
Advanced Ship Customization and Maintenance
After securing your vessel and crew, you must return to your base of operations to finalize the setup and begin the improvement process. Dr. Galen will guide you through the next phase of the story, which emphasizes the technical maintenance and enhancement of your new asset.
A specialized tutorial quest introduces the fundamentals of ship management and combat readiness. Players are tasked with hunting down and defeating Blackbeard’s ship near the camp, a feat that unlocks the ability to perform more complex upgrades at the base.

Successful modernization requires the construction of two vital facilities: the Shipbuilder’s Workbench and the Pier. While the workbench is used to manufacture essential components, the Pier serves as the physical interface where these parts are integrated into the ship’s structure:
- Heavy cannons
- Hull reinforcements
- Landing equipment
To equip an upgrade, you must place the item in your character’s inventory and approach the Pier. From the ship’s management interface, you can drag and drop equipment into the active slots, allowing for a seamless transition between various tactical setups.

The Pier also provides the utility to rename your ship and manage its cargo hold, provided the vessel is docked within the appropriate zone. If you ever find yourself separated from your ship, simply pressing Esc and then “K” will instantly summon the vessel to your current coordinates.
Mastering these systems ensures that your presence in Windrose is felt across every horizon. With your naval foundation established, players are encouraged to maintain their personal readiness by exploring the various available methods for healing and self – sustenance.
